Recommendations:We've asked some former members of our group to write a short paragraph explaining their experiences in New Dawn as an aide in your decision of joining our team as well as learning what life is like on the road.... My months with the New Dawn Singers taught me many, valuable lessons. For example, I learned how to put on makeup in the dark. How to make the quickest, least noticable exit from the stage when my skirt fell off. How to make up words to a song, right in the middle, because I forgot them. How to learn a speech, written on a napkin, less than 30 minutes before the show. How to eat lots of interesting things, served by people who were housing us, without complaining. How to avoid seagull droppings landing on my head. How to sing through hilarious laughter, because there's a hairball in my prop placed by another prankster performer. How to make tuna fish sandwiches with just the right amount of mayonaise. How to sleep ANYWHERE (including the floor of the van). How to roll cables the right way. How to burn a hole through my tights with my curling iron. How to break the strap of at least 5 pairs of dance shoes. How to live out of a suitcase for a very long time. How to pack for more than one climate and still only bring one suitcase. How to share one bathroom with 8 other people. How to keep dancing after my foot went through the portable stage. How to drive on the Garden State Parkway at night. How to sound like a true southerner, even though I'm a Yankee. How to laugh at myself when I make mistakes. How to practice for more hours than I slept in a week. How to turn down advances from a guy in a hot dog suit. How to sneak the hairball into someone else's prop. How to do a mic check. How to make a room more homey by adding ivy and pictures of strangers. How to dance, barefoot, at a gas station. How to save water by not taking a shower, but by washing my hair with a dirty towel. How to wear a bathrobe. How to laugh at other people when they make mistakes. How to paint scenery. How to waltz. How to not scream when a bat falls off the stage. Oh, there are millions of other examples. I could go on for ages! But seriously, after spending roughly 22 months with New Dawn, I learned a lot about myself, about working with others, and about my relationship with God. I learned how important it is to accept other people's opinions, and to work out your differences. I gained a greater appreciation of this beautiful country as we drove across it. I saw, first hand, how God answers prayer and how there is nothing more exciting in life than serving Him. I loved every minute I spent on stage, and am so very thankful for the opportunity I had to be a part of such a terrific ministry. Although I can't remember every person I met, or every town we stopped in, I do know that each of those experiences shaped me into who I am today. I walked away from my time in New Dawn with a ton of memories and some very dear friends. If God leads you to this group, I hope you'll take Him up on the chance to serve Him in this unique and exciting way!
- Andrea Roth I absolutely loved the time I spent with The New Dawn Singers. Although I only traveled with them for a summer, I felt like it was much longer. The group was extremely welcoming and have turned out to be some great lasting friends. The experiences that I had, both on and off the stage, are some of my greatest summer memories. Performing great music on a stage with fellow believers is an experience that cannot be matched. If the opportunity ever arises again, I would definitely enjoy performing with The New Dawn Singers again! - Cassie Bertrand
